Lake Macquarie City Council has been allocated $103,309 from the 2022 Coast and Estuary Grant Program to complete protection and enhancement works at Salts Bay.

Salts Bay is located at Swansea Heads and is a popular water recreation spot for locals and tourists, especially during the Summer Period.

The littoral rainforest at the site is an endangered ecological community. The works will reduce the impacts on the rainforest from invasion and establishment of transformer weeds.

In addition, the project will mitigate the issues associated with urbanisation, such as rubbish dumping and track erosion from unauthorised public access. This is an issue local residents have raised with Ms Catley in the past.

Ms Yasmin Catley MP – Member for Swansea encouraged Lake Macquarie City Council to apply for the grant and has been a strong supporter of the project.

Ms Catley also advocated for sealing Salts Bay Road, which was completed last year.

Ms Yasmin Catley MP - Member for Swansea said “I was pleased to hear that Council has been awarded $103,309 to conduct protection and enhancement works at Salts Bay”.

“Locals have raised their concerns regarding the degradation of the site in the past, so it is pleasing to see Council taking action on the issue”.

“The site is frequently visited by locals and tourists. It is crucial that the works take place to ensure that they can enjoy Salts Bay well into the future”.

“I have received great feedback from the community following the sealing of Salts Bay Road last year. I know that they will be happy to see these works take place too”.
