LOCAL NEWS

World Suicide Prevention Day Walk

It was great to take part in Lifeline's Walk With Us for World Suicide Prevention Day, at Dixon Park this morning. After the walk, I also had the opportunity to lay a flower to remember those lost to suicide. Lifeline work hard to ensure that no person in Australia has to face their darkest moments alone. Staff and volunteers are available 24 hours a day to listen, without judgement to anyone who is feeling overwhelmed, experiencing crisis or longs to be heard. I thank them for the important work that they do and for organising the event.

Mannering Park Fish Kill

I was concerned to hear that a second fish kill had occurred at Mannering Park. It has been a matter of weeks since the last event, where hundreds of dead fish washed up along the shore line on 5 August. The EPA concluded that it was natural causes that resulted in the August event. I have requested to speak with the Minister for Environment and Heritage and Minister for Agriculture about the event as a matter of urgency. I have also asked for the NSW Government to provide every resource available, to quickly address the situation and determine the cause of this fish kill.

Meals on Wheels Day

Wednesday 31 August was Meals on Wheels Day. On the day, I had the pleasure of joining John and Liz from Meals on Wheels Central Coast on there rounds. Meals on Wheel is a fantastic community organisation who provide an important community service. Thank you to all the volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for this fantastic organisation, I encourage you to get in touch with your local service.

STATE & NATIONAL NEWS

TAFE Funding Announced

The Albanese Labor Government announced that they would support state and territory governments in providing $1.1 billion in funding to TAFE, which would go towards funding 180,000 fee-free TAFE places. TAFE is an essential skills and training institution for up and coming tradies across our region. Additional funding is a great win for our community. Following this announcement was also National TAFE Day. It was fantastic to drop by Belmont TAFE to catch up with some of the fantastic TAFE teachers to celebrate the work that they do.

Early Childhood Educators and Nurses and Midwives Strike

On Wednesday, early childhood educators across the state walked off the job to rally for real reform and better working conditions. Our educators are burnt-out, over worked and are paid far less than what they deserve for the important work they do in supporting the development of young minds. Nurses and midwives also went on strike last week over the crisis in our health system. Unfortunately, I was unable to join these workers at their rallies, but I strongly support their efforts in calling on the Government to address these crises by taking urgent action.
